TL494BD Application Field and Working Principle
TL494BD is a high performance Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller meant for regulating the output of switching Mode Power Supply (SMPS) applications. TL494BD Working Principle
TL494BD operates on the fixed frequency oscillator principle. When the power supply is turned on, the oscillator starts with a delay period set by the dead time of the output transistors and the circuit configuration. This delay period sets the oscillator at a specific frequency as required for your design, that is, if the dead time is set to 0, then the oscillator will operate at the maximum frequency.
The output transistors then switch at the rate set by the oscillator. As they switch, they convert the power supply input voltage into a pulsating voltage. This is fed to the secondary feedback loop, which controls the pulse width of the output voltage.
The output voltage is then measured using the auxiliary feedback-regulation loop. The output of this loop is then compared to a reference voltage, and the oscillator is adjusted accordingly to maintain the required output voltage. This is the basic principle of the TL494BD.
TL494BD Applications
Apart from SMPS applications, TL494BD can also be used for controlling various AC/DC rectifiers and inverters. It can be used for any application requiring accurate control of power, from very low to very high power levels.
