Working Principle

The TL497ACPWR is a DC-DC switching regulator. It\'s fully integrated, synchronous-rectified, constant-frequency-controlled, step-down switching regulator. It consists of power switch, oscillator, schottky protection, synchronous rectifier, error amplifier, drive control, reset and voltage reference.

Once powered, the circuit will start to operated under the control of an oscillator that has a constant frequency of 8kHz. The output power is regulated by the error amplifier, which compares the voltage reference with a feedback signal. When the output voltage is lower than it should be, the error amplifier will increase the duty cycle of the switch to compensate for the voltage drop.

The TL497ACPWR also features synchronous rectification which makes it more efficient than traditional AC-DC converters. Synchronous rectification means the rectifier is operated in synchronism with the main switch to ensure that both parts are connected at the same time. This helps to eliminate power losses due to the cut-off of the anti-parallel diode during the off-state of the switch.

The TL497ACPWR provides also a protection circuitry as shut down, over power, under voltage and over current protection depending on the application. In addition, it can also be used with an external thermal shutdown signal for extra protection.
