TL5001CPSR/1 General Description

TL5001CPSR/1 is a synchronous buck converter controller with a minimum of external components for easy design and superior resistance against supply noise and transients. External components for under voltage lockout and soft start are included, which are often omitted in other step-down PWM controllers. These integrated cores provide greater design flexibility, allowing operation from 5 V to 50 V with a minimum of added components.

The controller contains all essential control functions, including current mode control, frequency control and voltage loop compensation, as well as thermal and DC current protection. The nominal internal switching frequency of 400 kHz is adjustable by external components for precise frequency control. It also incorporates an OT (over temperature) protection circuit, power good signal and a voltage reference.

TL5001CPSR/1 Working Principle

The TL5001CPSR/1 is a high integrative buck PWM step-down DC-DC controller. Its operating principle consists of a sawtooth ramp generator and a comparator which regulates output voltage by generating certain pulse width. In steady-state operation, the pulse width is adjusted according to feedback voltage to maintain constant output voltage.

During the period of sawtooth ramp, the internal current-sense comparator compares the voltage of battery with the output voltage. If the output voltage is lower than battery, the pulse width of charging increasing continuously, in order to increase output voltage. At the same time, if the output voltage is higher than battery, the pulse width of charging decreasing continuously, in order to reduce output voltage.

In steady-state operation, the dutycycle of regulator can be expressed as dutycycle=1/((2*Vout/Vin)-1). With the dutycycle ratio varying with feedback voltage, the output voltage is maintained at the set value.
