TL5001IDR is a low supply current voltage regulator designed specifically for use in low voltage dc to dc measurements such as switching mode DC-DC converters, LED or LED backlighting applications. This integrated circuit performs both a low dropout voltage regulation and power switch control functions using an internal 0.38V reference voltage. A wide input range can be selected allowing efficient operation of switching circuits over a wide input voltage range.

Working Principle

The TL5001IDR operates using a peak current mode control. When power is supplied to the regulating circuit, the current sense comparator senses the peak current of the output sensed by the feedback loop and determines when to turn the power switch off, irrespective of when the feedback loop is requesting the switch to turn off. This is an advantage in low input and low load situations, as it provides a more robust switching scheme.

Using the clock oscillator, the controller will, through its internal logic, determine when to turn the power switch on and off. The peak current comparator will then monitor the current and when the peak current is too high, the power switch will be turned off until the oscillator triggers it again the next cycle. This cycle continues until the voltage reaches the desired level.

The thermal protection of this type of controller protects the device from overheating in cases where the output voltage is too low or too high compared to the desired voltage due to an input voltage issue or a load issue. It will shut down when the junction temperature rises above a pre-defined limit, thus protecting the device from damage.
