Optical Sensors - Ambient Light, IR, UV Sensors
Optical sensors measure light intensity and amount of incident energy and are broadly used to detect different electromagnetic fields in a wide range of application areas. Optical sensors can detect ambient light (visible or infrared ), near infrared (NIR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and convert them into an equivalent electrical signal. This article examines the application field and working principle of the TMD27711 ambient light sensor from the perspective of an optical sensor.TMD27711 is a miniature reflective light-to-digital converter, designed to sense ambient light intensity detecting from 0 to 1,000 lux with ±20% accuracy, and can output a digital signal which can distinguish between 9 different levels of light intensity. It is particularly suited for applications that require very low power consumption, such as battery-powered mobile terminals, portable instruments, and digital still cameras.The optimal sensing range of the TMD27711 is from 200-1000 lux. In the low lux regions (<200 lux) it can measure the light levels but at the expense of reduced linearity, while the output linearity is maintained up to ~1,000 lux. The sensing wavelength is aligned with the spectrum of the sun, so its performance is optimal when used outdoors. The low-power consumption feature of the TMD27711 makes it ideal for battery powered portable applications, with power consumption typically below 5micro-amp in normal operation.The TMD27711 consists of an array of four independent photodiodes which are designed to respond to light in the broad spectral range between 325 nm and 1000 nm. The output from the photodiode is converted into a digital code and output via a 4-bit signal. An analogue amplifier is also included to provide the required Gain and Offset, which is essential for linearity and precision. An integrated capacitor is used as an integrator capacitor to form a “crude” RTD (Rapid Timing Diode) with the photodiode. The integration time is adjustable, depending on the amount of light being detected. The TMD27711 is capable of directly interfacing with standard microcontrollers, and can be accurately calibrated for linearized readings. An additional External Reference Voltage could be used to reduce the offset voltage. The device is also incredibly small compared to conventional optical sensors, making it ideal for space constrained applications. In conclusion, the TMD27711 ambient light and infrared (IR) sensor is a highly versatile device, offering excellent light detection accuracy and low power consumption.
