Optical sensors, which detect and measure visible, infrared (IR), and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, have numerous applications. The TMD27713 is one such optical sensor that belongs to the ambient light, IR, and UV sensor family. It is a miniature, digital ambient light and IR intensity monolithic sensor that features an oxide-semiconductor process-based, low-power, digital light-to-digital 16-bit readings, a wide optical dynamic range, an integrated visible and IR blocking filter, and a wide supply voltage range.
The TMD27713\'s primary application is the detection of ambient light and IR radiation. It features an ambient light sensing (ALS) mode as well as an IR-only mode for applications requiring increased sensitivity or background illumination cancellation. Additionally, the device\'s 17-bit word resolution enables the sensing of very low light intensities to produce accurate readings while consuming very little power by operating at a supply voltage as low as 1.8V.

In the ALS mode, the photodiode connected to the TMD27713 converts incident light energy into current that is then converted into a digital output.
The IR-only mode is best suited for applications where high sensitivity and low power consumption are key, such as TVs, motion detection, and security systems. In this mode, only the IR light is detected by the device, as the visible light is completely blocked by the built-in bandpass filter. The IR and visible light are then separated from each other using a bandpass filter. The IR component is then converted into a digital output and forwarded to the microcontroller.
