TVS diodes, also known as transient voltage suppressors, are designed to protect sensitive electronic components from damaging transients caused by electrical disturbances, such as lightning or electrostatic discharge. The TP6KE30A is a popular six-pin surface-mount TVS diode designed for use in portable and industrial applications. Developed by Torex Semiconductor, the diode features dual silicon chips with each providing an avalanche voltage of 30V and a maximum peak pulse power rating of 1500 watts. This makes it suitable for handling transients in both AC and DC line voltages, as well as mains-related overvoltages.
The TP6KE30A is small but powerful enough to support a wide range of applications such as portable electronics, industrial systems, communication systems and other electronic devices. Its small size and low profile make it perfect for applications where space is limited and where the device needs to be close to the component being protected. With a reverse leakage current of 5μA, it has an excellent ability to suppress overvoltages without influencing the current flow.
The working principle of the TP6KE30A is based on a combination of avalanche breakdown and temperature compensation. When the voltage across the diode reaches the avalanche voltage, the diode begins to conduct and energy is absorbed in the form of heat, which causes the temperature of the diode to rise. The diode then adopts a higher breakdown voltage to compensate for the rise in temperature, a process known as temperature compensation. By using this dual-stage approach, the TP6KE30A can protect sensitive components against a wide range of overvoltages.
When an excessive overload or short-circuit current is applied to the output of the diode, the voltage across the diode rises quickly and reaches its transient breakdown voltage. At this point, the diode conducts heavily and the current is absorbed in the form of heat. However, once the overload or short-circuit current has been removed, the voltage across the diode rapidly recovers to a safe level. The diode then returns to its non-conducting state and the component is protected from damage.
