TP6KE56A is a kind of unidirectional TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diode. It can protect vulnerable components from lightning-induced transients, electrostatic discharges (ESD) and other surge events. The TP6KE56A can handle ESD voltage up to 30KV and surge peak current up to 260A.

Application Field

TP6KE56A is widely used in the applications that require transient protection, such as electronic appliance, security system, data communication and automotive system. In electronic appliance, it can protect electronic components from lightning-induced transients, ESD and other surges. In security system, it can ensure the normal operations of surveillance camera, which requires reliable electrical power. Working Principle

The working principle of TP6KE56A is based on avalanche breakdown mechanism. It contains a pair of highly doped PN junction, which provides a very strong electric field near the junction when connected with the external power supply. When the external voltage reaches the breakdown voltage (Vbr) of the diode, the electrons and holes speeds up and collide with each other to generate “hot electrons”. The hot electrons then knock other electrons out of the silicium atoms, producing an avalanche which can protect the circuit. The breakdown voltage (Vbr) of TP6KE56A is 6.8V with temperature coefficient of +5mV/℃.

The clamping voltage (Vc) denote the maximum voltage across the diode, which is also known as the peak pulsed power rating or the breakdown voltage in a relatively short pulse. The typical clamping voltage of TP6KE56A is 14V.

As the avalanche breakdown occurs, the current rating of the diode is limited by its junction\'s thermal limitation junction transparency current rating (Ipp). The Ipp of TP6KE56A is typically 12.5A.

The TP6KE56A also features transient time response characteristics and bilateral ESD protection capabilities. The response time is less than 1.0 nanosecond, which is faster than most electronic circuits. The ESD protection capability can resist IEC61000-4-2 15KV voltage for contact discharge and 8KV for air discharge, with little or no effective clamp voltage.
