TVS-diodes are a class of electrical protection components used in a variety of applications, primarily in the motor, power and lighting industries. While there are many types and designs of TVS-diodes, the TP6KE33A is a relatively common type.
The TP6KE33A is a bidirectional three-terminal transient voltage suppression diode designed to protect equipment from transients induced by lightning and other temporary voltage spikes. The device has a peak pulse power rating of 600W. It has a low capacitance (less than 5pF) for most applications, and it has a working voltage from 5V to 33V.
The TP6KE33A consists of three electrical terminals: a common terminal (Anode), a positive terminal (Cathode) and a third, which is the Drain pin. When the common and Cathode leads are connected to a circuit, current may flow in either direction through the drain lead. When a voltage greater than the rated value is applied to the same circuit, the TP6KE33A will act as a clamping device and prevent voltage levels from exceeding the device’s breakdown limit.
In addition to lightning protection, the device may also be used to protect circuits against such conditions as negative transients caused by switching or interference, inductive kickbacks, motor runbacks, and arcing contacts. In terms of size, the TP6KE33A has a lead-free, surface mount version designed to fit on a 0.1in. (2.54mm) pin-pitch. For increased power handling capabilities, an SMD package is available with a lead-free termination and high efficiency thermal management system.
