Working Principle
The TPS51511EVM implements a synchronous buck converter using TI\'s TPS51511 controller. The converter takes a nominal input voltage from 75 V to 275 V while the output voltage is programmable from 0.7 V to 5 V. The EVM is designed to deliver up to 270 W of maximum output power, with switching frequencies up to 1.1 MHz and efficiency spreads between 79.4% to 94.8%.
The converter uses constant frequency, peak current mode control for fast transient response and reduced components count. This is done using a fixed off-time and an adjustable signal for peak current which defines the maximum ON-time. Soft start is enabled by adjusting the threshold voltage to set the on-time and by adjustably conditioning the driving signals with current ramps during soft-start phase.
The controller also features patented inductor DCR compensation and a high-frequency jittering technique to reduce high-frequency noise emissions. It also features a number of integrated functions such as programmable-prebiased output detector, short-circuit protection, and over-voltage protection.
The module operates with high efficiency and low noise due to its high switching frequency, and offers designers an easy way to quickly prototype and test a range of power supply designs. Through the integrated peripheral connections, the design and performance of the system can be adapted and tested for specific customer requirements.
