TPS55386EVM-363 is an evaluation module that selectively tests and evaluates the advantages of Texas Instruments’ TPS55386 in the off-line switching mode power supply (SMPS) application field. It helps to reduce the design cycle time of an SMPS system with improved design efficiency and increased accuracy.

The TPS55386EVM-363 is a 12V input, 3.3V output DC-DC evaluation platform featuring a TPS55386 synchronous buck controller, LP2991 low-dropout voltage regulator, and a full set of evaluation components including required gate-drive, power, output, decoupling, and loop compensation components.

The TPS55386EVM-363 board achieves an industry-leading 90% efficiency at a 3.3V output and 0.5A load, as well as maintaining 97% efficiency at 0.1A and 84% efficiency at 0A. This high level of efficiency optimizes current operations, heat generation, and board space, allowing for boards to be compact and set them apart from competitors.

The working principle behind the TPS55386EVM-363 is fairly straightforward. The board allows for switching speed adjustability to optimize the transient response and comprises two stages, PFC and DC/DC conversion. The PFC stage begins when a rectifier diode turns on to allow a current to flow through the inductor. Voltage energy builds up during the positive half of the cycle and is stored in the output capacitor that is connected to the shunt resistor.

This ensures vertical stabilization and linearity, and the adjustable oscillation frequency enables the capability of optimizing the transient response for fast load transients. Additionally, with adjustable slew rate for the external power switch, designers can set the exchange frequency of power and optimize the design for EMI performance.

In order to maximize the range of applications for the TPS55386EVM-363, a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 18V, input protection, including undervoltage lockouts, overvoltage protection, reverse voltage protection, and short circuit protection, is provided. The TPS55386 also incorporates external compensation and adjustable external loop compensation, allowing designers to precisely design their systems for desired performance.
