The TPS5210EVM-126 is designed to provide a platform for evaluation of the TPS5210 synchronous buck controller. It is especially useful for evaluating the synchronization feature, which is a unique feature available with the TPS5210. It also includes the high performance VDIPS LLC-based converter and low profile components to minimize overall platform cost and vertical board footprint.
In terms of application field, the TPS5210EVM has the capability to operate from wide input voltages of 12V or 19V to output voltages from 0.6V to 5.7V and currents of 0.5A, 1.5A and 3A. This makes the TPS5210EVM suitable for a wide range of applications. For example, it can be used as an energy harvester for battery management systems. It can be used to generate step-down voltage in industrial controls, Home Automation (e.g., lighting, motor drives, etc.), Automotive Infotainment Systems and Automotive PowerTrainer evaluation boards. Additionally, it can be used as a step-up converter for Medical application requirements, such as portable vital signs monitors, medical equipment and hand-held systems. The synchronizing capability also allows for operation in switch-mode telecom/datacom applications.
In order to achieve high-efficiency, the design of the SMPS and the organization of the applied parts and parameters are of great important. The TPS5210EVM comprises of optimal MCU, FETs, optocouplers, and 90-Vin, 3A buck, synchronous rectifier converter components. It also incorporates an extensive shutdown control and sense windings for monitoring the performance of the converter. Moreover, due to the features of the TPS5210EVM, it offers a versatile synchronizing feature. In addition to the advantages of the synchronous rectifier, the flexibility in the control pin setup of the controller allows for voltage inversion or generator applications.
