TPS54202EVM-716 is an evaluation board for Texas Instruments (TI)’s TPS54202 synchronous buck regulator. This board was specially designed to provide the design engineer a platform for evaluating parameters and characteristics of the TPS54202.The TPS54202EVM-716 evaluation board has an operating input voltage range of 4.5V to 19V, thus making it suitable for applications where both the buck regulator IC and board itself may be subjected to noisy environments. With a switching frequency of 400kHz, this evaluation board can be used in a wide range of applications such as powering FPGAs, microprocessors, etc. It can also be used to power lighting and motor drivers.This evaluation board, with its built-in thermal protection circuitry, provides protection against short-circuit, over-temperature and over-voltage events. It also provides adjustable current limit and output voltage configurations, allowing the user to adjust the parameters to meet the requirements of the application.The application field of TPS54202EVM-716 is quite large, ranging from automotive to consumer electronics. It can be used in a variety of applications such as automotive interior lighting, electric vehicle battery management, electric vehicle DC-DC converters, servers, gaming consoles, portable electronics, and so on.The working principle of the TPS54202EVM-716 at the heart of this evaluation board consists of two stages; the first stage is an oscillator, which generates a variable frequency pwm signal and modulates the output, while the second stage is a synchronous buck regulator, which switches the output in order to regulate the output voltage. This buck regulator contains MOSFETs (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) that are controlled by a PWM signal, generated by the control IC or microcontroller.The operation of TPS54202EVM-716 begins with the application of the input voltage to the V+ and V- terminals in order to provide power to the buck regulator. The design engineer can then adjust the potentiometers on the board to vary the parameters of the buck regulator such as the output voltage, current limit, switching frequency and so on.The TPS54202EVM-716 evaluation board can operate in both continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to control the output voltage. In CCM, the main switch is always on and the power loss is reduced, while in DCM, the main switch is switched on and off periodically and the output voltage is regulated. The switching frequency of the main switch is set by the potentiometer on the board.The output voltage of the TPS54202EVM-716 is controlled by the voltage reference of the control IC or microcontroller, which is adjustable through the potentiometer on the board. The current limit of the regulator is also adjustable through a potentiometer on the board. The adjustment range of the current limit is 5A to 8A.The TPS54202EVM-716 evaluation board is an excellent choice for evaluating the operation of TPS54202 synchronous buck regulator in wide range of applications.
