High efficiency power management ICs (PMICs) are designed to efficiently manage the power flow and distribution in a wide range of electronic systems, from smartphones and wearables to industrial and automotive applications. The Texas Instruments TPS54372PWP is a high switching frequency, special purpose, dual-channel, step-down voltage regulator, which provides high-efficiency, high-tuning ratio,intelligent power management, and load transient response.
The TPS54372PWP’s application field includes Tablet PCs and Cellular Base Station Power Supplies. It is also suitable for telecom and industrial/automotive distribution applications.
TPS54372PWP offers two channels, one of which is a high-voltage main converter and the other is an auxiliary converter. The main converter consists of a high-frequency switched-mode power supply (SMPS) with a single switch and a 5 μH inductor. The output voltage range is 0.90 V to 5.50 V. The current limit is 5 A. The auxiliary converter has an adjustable output voltage range of 0.90 V to VIN and a maximum output current of 3 A. The main and auxiliary converters operate independently.
The TPS54372PWP integrates various extensive protection features to ensure safe operation and provide robust performance, including input undervoltage lockout (UVLO), output over voltage protection (OVP), overtemperature protection (OTP), and reverse-current protection (RPP).
The Working Principle of The TPS54372PWP is Simple. The input power is fed to the switching node of the MOSFET through the 4.7μF input capacitor and enters the V1 pin. The MOSFET is controlled by the internal PWM controller. The switch is turned off during the off time of the high-frequency clock signal. During this time the inductor current flows through the Schottky diode and the fixed output capacitor to the load. The output of the main converter is fed to the input of auxiliary converter after the load. After the load, the voltage of the output capacitor is monitored to regulate the output voltage. The SW pin is used to control the on/off of the MOSFET of the main converter.
To increase the efficiency of the TPS54372PWP under heavy loads, a current mode architecture with a signal current-regulation circuit is employed. The signal current is compared to a signal voltage to generate a switch control signal. The signal current increases or decreases proportionally with input voltage changes and main converter output power. Higher signal current results in higher switch duty cycle, and hence, higher efficiency.
The output voltage of the main converter is typically 50 mV higher than the value set by the voltage divider network, due to the voltage drop across the MOSFET. This offset can be adjusted using the OFF pin. The ON/OFF pin is used to control the ON/OFF state of the main converter using an external voltage, such as that of a battery pack.
The TPS54372PWP offers a variety of features to ensure maximum operational efficiency. It has an integrated hot-swap detection circuit, enabling output voltage regulation under direct in-rush current conditions. An adjustable soft-start circuit is provided to prevent output current transients. A fast proactive transient response, good line regulation, low quiescent current, low noise, low ripple and good output voltage accuracy make the TPS54372PWP a cost-effective solution for many applications.
In order to maintain stability, the TPS54372PWP features an external compensation loop. This loop consists of an external resistor and capacitor in parallel, and is connected between the COMP and GND pins. The user can adjust the resistor value to set the required output voltage ripple and transient response. The compensation accuracy is also enhanced by the compensation pin voltage adjustment.
As a special purpose voltage regulator, the TPS54372PWP combines high-efficiency and high switching frequency. It is suitable for a wide range of power management applications, such as in Tablet PCs and Cellular Base Station Power Supplies, telecom and industrial/automotive distribution applications.
