TPS54821RHLR application field and working principle

The TPS54821RHLR (hereafter referred as TPS54821) is an advanced synchronous step down converter designed for embedded applications and is part of the family of DC-DC switching regulators. The TPS54821 is designed to addresses the needs of the most demanding computing applications, and is suitable for post-regulation of power supplies. The device is offered in MSOP-10 and 10-pin VSSOP package options, which suitable for automotive and high-reliability applications.

Application

A typical application of the TPS54821 is shown in Figure 1. It is suitable for many applications such as consumer equipment, white goods, industrial, automotive and communications applications.

Working principle

The TPS54821 RHLR DC-DC switching regulator is a synchronous buck regulator which operates in switching mode in order to provide a regulated output voltage. The device contains a high-frequency, current-mode control boost converter, which utilizes current-mode control feedback to ensure superior stability during transients. It also contains a network of current-limiting features (eFuse OTP, etc.) to protect against output overload or short circuit.

The circuit is enabled when the PWR_EN pin is driven low. When enabled, the PWM section generates a current-mode feedback error signal based on the output voltage feedback. This error signal is then used to control the duty cycle of the oscillator, which controls the amount of current that is delivered to the load. The load current is then monitored and limited by an integrated over-current protection circuit.

The TPS54821 features a spread-spectrum PWM that helps reduce the overall switching noise generated by the device, allowing use in RF sensitive applications. The device also features a differential voltage feed-forward input, allowing designers to adjust the output voltage based on the input voltage. Finally, the device also features an integrated eFuse OTP, which allows the user to program the output voltage setting.
