Introduction

The TI TPS54A20RNJT is a high-performance synchronous buck regulator designed specifically to power high-end notebook, ultra-mobile, and tablet applications. Working Principle

The TPS54A20RNJT’s main operation is based on a FET-bridge synchronous buck switching regulator. This application consists of four power switches, namely, two high side P-Channel MOSFETs, two low side N-Channel MOSFETs, a compensation network and the Driver IC. The duty cycle of each switch is determined by the synchronous current regulation loop and the output voltage loop. The output voltage loop works by adjusting the current mode loop’s current limit to maintain the output voltage at the desired level. The synchronous current regulation loop is responsible for deliver the maximum output power to the load.When the supply voltage is more than the output voltage, the P-channel MOSFETs (high side MOSFETs) are turned ON and the N-channel MOSFETs (low side MOSFETs) are turned OFF. This creates a voltage drop across the low side MOSFET which results in a current flow to the output inductor. The current flowing through the output inductor creates a magnetic field. This field is opposed by the diode connected to the output capacitor and the voltage is limited. When the voltage across the output capacitor reaches the desired level, the low side MOSFET is turned ON and the magnetic field collapses. The excess current stored in the inductor is now transferred to the output capacitor and maintains the voltage across the output capacitor at the desired level. When the load current decreases, the current limit loop reduces the current limit in order to maintain the output voltage.
