Working Principle

The TPS55330RTER switching regulator works by rapidly switching current in a buck-type power stage when enough current has built up in the external inductor. The inductor quickly stores energy from the input supply and releases that energy to output as the current is switched.

The IC starts to turn on the switch when the voltage of the feedback pin (FB) exceeds the reference voltage. It controls the current by setting the on time of the switch and therefore controlling the output voltage. The internal compensator produces a current proportional to the error (VFB-VREF), and reduces as the output voltage rises. When the current reaches zero (or certain current limit level), the switch turns off, the inductor releases its current and the cycle begins again. As the output voltage drops, the cycle repeats, until the error voltage is zero again.
