The TPS60110EVM-132 from Texas Instruments is a small-profile evaluation board that allows engineers to analyze and modify the performance of buck converters. The board can be used to assess and optimize a switching power supply’s efficiency, dynamic response, and thermal performance. Suitable for both AC/DC (off-line) and DC/DC applications, this kit provides the convenience needed for engineers to evaluate all performance parameters.
Being a Small Form Factor (SFF) evaluation board, the TPS60110EVM-132 provides the flexibility to design and evaluate small board physical envelopes for high current DC/DC regulators. By combining the capabilities of the TPS60110E VM-132 board with a flexible evaluation setup, engineers can evaluate the efficiency, dynamic response, and thermal performance of their power system designs while determining the optimal size for their board.This evaluation platform is based on the TPS60110E buck converter and offers 30mV current sensing accuracy with the ability to supply up to 14A of current. This platform has an on-board CAN transceiver module that enables the evaluation of power systems that require a CAN bus for communication. The TPS60110EVM-132 also supports an array of other features such as an input overvoltage protection circuit, a precision reference ((maximum accuracy of ±0.5%), step load and transient response performance, logic control and efficient current sharing, as well as the capability of measuring light-load performance.
The TPS60110E buck converter of this evaluation platform can operate at a switching frequency up to 1.8MHz, with support for both discontinuous and continuous conduction modes. The operating frequency can be adjusted manually using an on-board trimmer, or through CAN/I2C bus control. The onboard synchronous rectifier provides improved efficiency compared to diode rectification. The evaluation system also supports power-good and power-fail signals, which allow the load side to be monitored for current protection.
The TPS60110EVM-132 evaluation board has a wide input voltage range of 9-36V (ac/dc) allowing designers to evaluate the performance of their power system designs for both low and high-voltage applications. The evaluation board support four different inductor sizes, allowing engineers to optimize their designs for improved efficiency. The evaluation board also has provisions for external loop compensation, allowing designers to adjust application specific stability depending on the load step response required.
To help with thermal design, the TPS60110EVM-132 board includes a thermal sense resistor. This resistor is connected to the PCB’s ground plane, making it possible to measure the thermal performance of the power system. In addition, the evaluation board also supports the use of a heatsink to improve thermal performance.
