Working Principle
The TPS60200 series of DC-to-DC switching regulators include a controller, two external power MOSFETs, a modulation circuit, an inductor and a few external components. The controller contains an error amplifier, dual comparators, two accurate reference voltages and several logic functions. The power MOSFETs are responsible for regulating the output voltage.
Under normal operation, the reference voltage is used to compare the output voltage with the feedback voltage, and the error amplifier generates an output voltage in response to the difference. This output is then compared with the PWM waveform from the modulation circuit, which is alternated during each switching cycle. If the outputs of the error amplifier and the PWM waveform are different, the comparators cause the duty cycle of the switching MOSFET to be changed, which modulates the average output voltage.
The inductor, which is connected between the switches, stores energy during the high-side switch turn-on time, and releases it during the low-side switch turn-on time. This allows the output voltage to adjust, as the input voltage changes. The two external MOSFETs are responsible for switching the voltage. The output voltage is regulated by changing the on-time of the Low-side MOSFET. Later, the power MOSFETs will turn off, and thus energy is stored in the output capacitor, which provides the initial energy for the next switching cycle.
