The TPS61001DGSG4 is a highly efficient, low quiescent current dc/dc boost converter from Texas Instruments. It is specifically designed to efficiently convert low source voltage from a single-cell Li-ion battery (2.7V) to 3.3V or 5V regulated output. This device is ideal for point-of-load (PoL) regulation of low voltage processors, FPGAs, and low voltage memories. The device includes an enable pin, which is used to enable/disable the regulator. The device is well-suited for space-constrained mobile applications using a LAN cable as a power supply.
The TPS61001DGSG4 is a synchronous step-up DC/DC converter with an input voltage range of 0.8V to 5.5V. Working principle:
The TPS61001DGSG4 is configured as a constant frequency, current-mode synchronous, boost converter. The device switches between an idle mode and an active mode, determined by the peak current control and the error amplifier, to regulate the output voltage. When the peak current limit is not disabled and the ready signal is low, the device is in the active mode.
During the active mode, the Power transistor Q1 is enabled, and the inductor current (IL) will ramp up as shown in figure 1. This current is monitored by the peak current control circuit and compared to the fixed reference current ITARGET. When the peak current limit is reached, the power MOSFET Q1 is quickly turned off, and the inductor current will now ramp downwards.
When the power MOSFET Q1 is disabled, its Drain-Source voltage (VDS) will reverse. This will then cause the reverse current to flow through the power MOSFET Q1 into the inductor and back to the input capacitor. To prevent this reverse current, the body diode of power MOSFET Q1 (pMOS) is used. It will enable a "Flyback" voltage due to the energy stored in the inductor in the form of a magnetic field.
The Flyback Voltage is then rectified by the synchronous rectifier, Q2 and then filtered by the output capacitor. The power dissipated in the rectifier is minimized by the low conduction loss of the power MOSFET Q1 with the integrated Schottky diode. The integrated body diode also reduces EMI (Electro-Magnetic Interference) produced by the power MOSFET Q2.
The output voltage of the regulator is determined by the external resistor divider ratio. The device also includes a soft start feature that limits the maximum inductor current to avoid high inrush current when the device is first powered on.
