Working Principle

The TPS63050YFFR is a synchronous, DC-DC buck converter that uses a current mode architecture. It works by controlling the current from a switch, usually made from a power MOSFET, while operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). The switch is controlled by an internal bias circuit and an error amplifier that compares the output voltage feedback to an internal reference. The output voltage is set by a resistive divider and the input voltage must be higher than its regulation voltage.

When the switch turns on, current flows from the input supply, through the switch, and into the inductor. The current charge stored in the inductor increases, raising its magnetic field and supplying current to the output capacitors. When the switch turns off, however, the current stored in the inductor is released and is sent to the load. If the load suddenly draws more current, the switch will be turned on for longer than the regulation time and the output voltage will drop. This feature is called “peak-current-mode control”, and it helps to maintain a constant output voltage.
