TPS70151PWPR Application Field and Working Principle

Linear voltage regulators (LVRs) allow to regulate output voltage while consuming minimum power. TPS70151PWPR from Texas Instruments ® is the first single input linear voltage regulator (LVR) with a wide input voltage range of 4V to 50V that supports low voltage and high voltage applications. It is ideal for automotive and industrial systems. This section describes the application field and working principle of the TPS70151PWPR.

Application Field

The TPS70151PWPR is suitable for applications in high-power, low-voltage and high-voltage, such as: automotive systems and industrial systems. Due to its wide input voltage range of 4V to 50V, it is ideal in applications such as cooling fans, lamps, radios, navigation systems and car electronics. It provides a constant output voltage of 1.6V, 3V, 3.3V, 5V and adjustable which can stand up to 8A continuous output current.

The device requires a minimum number of external components that gives the customers ease-of-use and low product cost. Additionally, it features an enable/disable pin reduces standby current draw, adjustable soft-start, adjustable rise time and current limit. Furthermore, it has a thermal shutdown to protect the device during extreme conditions.

Working Principle

The TPS70151PWPR enables the design of power supplies for low voltage and high voltage applications when powered by a wide input voltage range. It is composed of a main transistor M1 and a current share control circuit, that is formed by a PNP-transistor M2, a reference voltage supply and a precision voltage divider. The main transistor M1 sets up the main current path. It has an input voltage (VIN) which can vary from 4V to 50V and it regulates a constant output voltage (VOUT).

The setting of the current share mode is determined by the base current of M2. The base capacitor of M2 is connected with the internal voltage reference, which will generate the proportionally output current share to provide the output voltage\'s keeping accuracy. And this voltage reference can be guaranteed the good stability and accuracy no matter how the temperature and load changes. The output voltage is adjusted by an external voltage divider connected to the output pin OUT.

In current share mode, the output current of TPS70151PWPR will no longer be variable by the load size. The current share ratio will be determined by the size of the base resistor connected to the current share pin. It is applied to reduce any current sharing errors that may occur due to changes in load. The proportioning of the output current is regulated by the transistor M2 and the current share control circuit. The register values of the current share pin will be set independently and this will set the desired proportion for the output current share.

The TPS70151PWPR can handle high input/output voltages with low inrush current. Additionally, it has low power consumption, reducing power losses and optimizing overall efficiency. It also has an thermal shutdown to keep device intact during the extreme conditions.
