PMIC - PFC (Power Factor Correction) is the process of improving the power factor of a power electrical system by removing harmonic currents, improving power quality and reducing power losses. The UC2854N is a monolithic integrated circuit (IC) used as a high-performance PFC controller in wide range of switch-mode power conversion applications. It can be used to form a single-stage, bridgeless, single phase, input PFC front-end converter.
The UC2854N PFC controller IC is based on an innovative current-mode control technique with the addition of a programmable voltage current limiter (VClimt) for fast load transient response and a precise slope-compensation network for better stability. It features a low quiescent current of less than 6 mA and a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. Its flexibility make it convenient to select operating frequency and thereby eliminate noise coupling between converterinput and critical loads.
The working principle of the UC2854N is based on the voltage hysteresis control (VHC) topology. It provides fast transient response to ensure continuous and precise PFC operation. The IC converts power factor of the power supply to a value close to unity, by controlling the input current to a sinusoidal waveform that follows the input voltage as closely as possible. When the input sinusoidal current is in phase with the input voltage, the power factor of the power supply is maximized. The main advantage of the UC2854N is that it is capable of operating under ultra-low, high line voltage conditions.
The UC2854N application field cover a wide spectrum which includes HDTVs, LCD TV, home theater systems, gaming computers, air conditioners, photocopiers, laser printers and other AC/DC power supplies. It can also be used in smart lightings, motor drives, and battery chargers. The use of this IC greatly improves the electrical efficiency of the power supply and also reduces harmonic current emission, making it ideal for use in high-density applications.
The UC2854N has an integrated on-board protection circuit which provides over-voltage, over-current and overtemperature protection. The IC also incorporates a number of safety features such as open-loop current trim, current-transducer reference gap measurement and single LED status Monitoring. The IC is highly efficient in providing very low conduction losses due to its low gate drive losses and low supply current.
