Working Principle

The UC2856DW is a current-mode controller, operating on a fixed frequency. It has an adjustable duty cycle, adjustable frequency, and a Soft Start duration that can be set to a desired duration.

The controller contains an error amplifier, used to compare the output voltage to the reference voltage. The error amplifier compares the voltage difference between the output of the error amplifier and the reference voltage and creates a current proportional to the error voltage. The output of the error amplifier is used to drive the high-side gate driver. The high side gate driver then directly drives the gates of the high-side N-MOSFET and the low-side N-MOSFET, with outputs proportional to the error current.

When the error voltage goes above zero, the high-side N-MOSFET is switched on, allowing the voltage to rise to the reference voltage. When the error voltage goes below zero, the high-side N-MOSFET is switched off, allowing the voltage to fall back to the reference voltage.

The UC2856DW provides automatic dynamic and static current limit protection. When the output current reaches a value greater than the current limit threshold, the controller will shut off the power to the load, limiting the output current to a safe level. This ensures that the device and circuits connected to the output are protected from excessive current.

The controller also has a built inA the additional feature of zero current detect (ZCD), which is used to sense when the current in the output is zero. When the current in the output is zero, the controller will shut off the power to the load, protecting it from damage due to excessive current.
