UC3909N application field and working principle

UC3909N belongs to the PMIC – Battery Charger family. It is a high-efficiency, high voltage linear charger which is ideal for charging Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Iron batteries. UC3909N solves high voltage battery charging problems in existing linear battery charger solutions. The UC3909N works with a range of input power sources such as AC and DC voltage sources, load dump tolerant and load dump non-tolerant. The UC3909N is also used in automotive systems.UC3909N works based on the Linear charger principle. When the input voltage of the battery is above the pre-charge voltage level, the UC3909N will regulate the input voltage to the pre-charge voltage level. Once the battery voltage reaches the pre-charge voltage level, the UC3909N will then regulate the charging current to the pre-charge current level. This current will then be maintained over time, until the battery voltage reaches the charge voltage level. Once the battery voltage reaches the charge voltage level, the charger will then back off the voltage to a maintenance voltage level.The main features include an adjustable pre-charge current, adjustable charge current, adjustable current transient protection threshold and adjustable voltage transient protection threshold. It also includes a charge complete LED indicator. The UC3909N is capable of providing up to 5A of charging current with a minimum quiescent current of only 15mA. The device also includes input voltage protection. The device is rated with an operating temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.The application field of the UC3909N range from automotive systems to Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Iron batteries.
