UCC28051D is an energy-efficient, active-off and low profile Power Factor Correction (PFC) integrated circuit (IC) produced by TI (Texas Instruments). It helps in improving the power factor of AC-DC conversion, protecting your system against any voltage and current spikes, and regulating inrush current. Moreover, it offers faster transient response, improved efficiency, and improved cost-effectiveness by reducing the amount of external components required.The UCC28051D is intended for use in AC-DC power applications, mainly in power distribution systems. It performs the task of active rectification, increases the efficiency of the system and reduces the total harmonic distortion in the power system. In addition, it prevents any voltage or current spikes, regulates inrush current, and provides a smooth power flow to the load. It has the capability to operate from a wide input voltage range (85-300 VAC), and offers three operating modes: single-stage PFC, buck boost, and two stage PFC. It also features a pulse frequency modulation, adjustable valley switching frequency, an auto restart option, and calibrated dead time control.Theoretically, the working principle of the UCC28051D can be divided into three main stages: power factor correction, rectification and regulation. The input voltage is rectified and filtered by the diodes and capacitors, then the input current of the PFC stage is improved by comparison with the reference voltage. By controlling the switching frequency of the PFC stage, the input current is improved, and the efficiency of the power system is increased. Finally, the current is regulated, preventing overcurrent and overvoltage conditions and protecting the load from damage.
The UCC28051D requires the use of two power topologies to achieve maximum efficiency - Active Power Factor Correction (APFC) and Resonant Mode Power Factor Correction (RM-PFC). The APFC is used to correct the voltage waveform, reduce the harmonic content of the input current, and to stabilize the input current.
