PCM ICs (Polymer Controllers) are designed to enable superior control over power management functions, such as voltage regulation and battery charging. The UCC2813D-0 is a polyphase, non-synchronous current mode controller designed specifically for synchronous rectified buck power converters. Its features make it suitable for a wide range of applications, including Telecom base stations, consumer electronics, servers and networking equipment, networking AV systems, and industrial and automotive power supplies.
The UCC2813D-0 IC supports a wide input voltage range of 4.5V-75V, making it compatible with most system voltage rails available. It delivers continuous output current up to 2A, and can front-end a wide variety of off-the-shelf buck synchronous rectifiers, enabling robust and reliable multiphase/multi-output power supply designs. It also supports a wide range of topologies including single phase, dual phase, three phase, and four phase versions.
The controller includes power supply sequence control logic, soft start, slew rate control, PWM feature (smoothing output voltage ripple and reducing EMI filter cost), adjustable PWM period, current limit setting and an internal clock. In addition, its integrated oscillator simplifies phase synchronization, while its internally compensated architecture enables more stable and user-friendly designs.
The UCC2813D-0\'s performance is enhanced by a proprietary, inherently frequency-modulated current mode architecture. This architecture, combined with the internal clock, enables it to maintain robust and precise control of the switching frequency. This, in turn, increases light load efficiency, reduces EMI, and improves transient response and line regulation. Additionally, its built-in Independent Soft-Stop and Programming Control logic helps to minimize inrush current during start-up and reduce output voltage overshoot during EMI filter transitions.
When it comes to the working principle of the UCC2813D-0, it is designed to be a flexible, non-synchronous buck controller capable of controlling the switch-mode power supply. The internal oscillator combines with two current-sensing loops that accurately regulate the output voltage by controlling the duty cycle of the switching device. This voltage regulation is achieved by sensing the current flowing through the feedback loop and adjusting the duty cycle accordingly, based on the programmed limits. The controller includes three main phases: soft start/stop, steady-state regulation, and fault protection. During soft start/stop, the controller gradually increases or decreases the output voltage from its set level in order to reduce the inrush current. The steady-state regulation phase maintains the synchronized output voltage, provided the current and voltage feedback signals are within the programmed limit range. Finally, the fault protection phase prevents the controller from over-current and over-voltage faults.
