Power Factor Correction (PFC) controllers are an integral part of the power management industry. The UCC2817PW is integrated with current and voltage loops and can provide rapid dynamic response and smooth overshoot-free transient performance. Moreover, the controller features the programmable over-temperature protection, low and high line input protection, soft-start/hiccup and brown-in/brown-out protection to power a wide range of AC-DC applications. Additionally, the built-in system interface provides protection monitoring, is capable of communicating with the external MCU and provides power-good signal.
The UCC2817PW is easy to use and suitable for applications with a power ranging from 300W to 2000W. This controller is built to lower the system implementation cost, with few external components required, and operates off a standard voltage rail ranging from 7V to 40V and can support input voltage up to 264Vac. Additionally, the UCC2817PW has a wide output current range up to 26A peak and provides programmable voltage and current sensing compromise, embedded into the PFC controller for fast response. The UCC2817PW operates as an oscillator and Error Amplifier based PFC. It will first generate a triangle waveform, which is compared to an error amplifier with a set point of 1. The output voltage of the error amplifier is then compared to the triangle waveform and used to drive the power MOSFET switch to regulate the power factor of the power system. The controller is equipped with the current sense comparator, which monitors the output current and, if high compared to the reference, will shut down the power stage until the source current is within the specified limits.
