Developed by Texas Instruments, UCC29950 is designed to deliver enhanced performance and improved system reliability in power supplies, with power ratings of up to 500W.The PFC application field of the UCC29950 is particularly well suited to high-power AC/DC power supply designs that require power factor correction. It helps to significantly reduce total harmonic distortion (THD) and provides excellent performance across the entire operating range of 0 to 100%, in constant voltage or constant current mode. The PFC circuit can also be used to reduce input line current distortion while still providing an extremely efficient power supply design.The working principle of UCC29950 is based on a unique architecture that combines the best-in-class advances in power factor correction technology to achieve superior levels of efficiency, power supply performance, and cost savings. At the heart of the UCC29950 is a linear controller with compensation for current ripple and output voltage stability. The constant voltage operation is achieved by controlling the average current demand at a fixed level, while the constant current operation is driven by controlling the average volt-seconds of a waveform to achieve the desired current.The unique compensation method in UCC29950 enables fast and accurate power factor correction over a wide range of line voltage, load current, and frequency, while also suppressing noise and harmonics. The output voltage and current are constantly monitored to provide over-voltage and over-current protection to the power supply. UCC29950 also features an embedded fault detector that ensures fast detection of any faults in the design, which help to maximize system safety and integrity.The UCC29950 is suitable for any PFC topology, such as three-phase, single-phase, bridgeless, bridged, or multiple output configurations. It also provides excellent performance with its smaller form factor and power efficiency levels which can reach up to 94%.
