Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are widely used components in various electronic applications such as industrial, consumer, automotive and military-aerospace products. They are composed of two aluminum foils, separated by a wafer of paper soaked in electrolyte and covered with an insulating layer usually made of plastic and rubber. The two aluminum foils have a very thin oxide layer on their surface, which acts as the dielectric between them. This oxide layer has a very high permittivity, which makes it an ideal material for storing energy in small packages.

The UEP2A100MPD1TA is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor with a rated capacitance of 100 µF and rated voltage of 25V. It is a DC-only capacitor, meaning it is suitable for operating at DC only, not AC applications. It is a radial, surface-mount type capacitor, meaning it can be mounted on a flat surface, as opposed to axial or through-hole type capacitors.

The working principle of aluminum electrolytic capacitors lies in the fact that the electric field generated between the two chargeable plates causes ions to transfer between the plates, effectively storing energy. When a voltage is applied across the capacitor electrodes, charges move through the oxide layer and accumulate on both sides of the dielectric. This creates an electric field and the charges stored are proportional to the applied voltage. When the voltage is removed, the charges on the plates return to their original positions, releasing energy.
