Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, or AECs, are a type of capacitor that uses the electrolysis of an aluminum oxide film formed on the surface of aluminum foil to act as the dielectric of the capacitor. The anode of a AEC is usually a smooth aluminum foil with oxide layer. The oxide layer works as a dielectric layer between the two metal foils (the anode and the cathode). The cathode of a AEC is usually a metalized Aluminum Foil or a metallized Aluminum Foil. AECs are commonly used because of their relatively large capacitance values in comparison to their size. This makes them ideal for applications such as power supplies, audio equipment, and communications systems. The UKA1H102MHD is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor made by Nichicon.
