Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are specialized capacitors used in various electronic applications. They are made from an aluminum foil with a very thin layer of oxide, an electrolyte and two electrodes. AECs are favorable devices for high-voltage, high-current and ripple energy storage applications. The working principle of UKL2AR33MDD AEC is based on electrolytic action which occurs at the interface between the oxide coating on the aluminum foil and the electrolyte. Three electrical terminals are formed in the AEC: the positive terminal (anode), the negative terminal (cathode) and the third being the body of the capacitor. When a voltage is applied, an electrical field forms between the two electrodes which polarizes the electrolyte. This causes the formation of a thin insulating layer called an electrolytic double layer at the interface between the positive and negative electrodes. This double layer is made up of positive ions on the anode side and negative ions on the cathode side. This layer prevents the electrical current from passing through the capacitor so that charge can be stored in it.

In addition, the double layer also acts as a dielectric which increases the capacitance of the device. AEFs are polar devices and should be connected with the correct polarity. If connected with incorrect polarity, the electrolyte may become acidic and damage the device.
