Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are components which are used for storing energy, smoothing voltage, and blocking or passing DC signals. They are composed of a solid conductive anode and a porous conductive solid electrolyte cathode. The electrolyte is typically an aprotic solvent, an ionized salt solution that allows passage of ions, and a gelling agent that helps produce a gel around the electrodes to prevent leakage. The electrolyte is contained in a case that is usually hermetically sealed and is made of aluminum, because aluminum has good thermal characteristics and can be used as a conductive material.
