ULN2074B Application Field and Working Principle

The ULN2074B is part of the family of Transistors - Bipolar (BJT) - Arrays, which is recognized for its ability to provide high current and voltage isolation in a single package. This device consists of a dielectrically-isolated array of 7 NPN Darlington pairs that are designed to interface between logic circuits and low voltage, high current, inductive loads.The ULN2074B can be used in a variety of applications such as relay and solenoid drivers, printer motors, lamp drivers and DC motor control. Its built-in protection features, including an on-chip zener diode, make it an excellent choice for use in harsh industrial environments. In addition, its wide operating temperature range (from -40⁰C to +85⁰C) makes it perfect for many commercial applications as well.The ULN2074B works by taking the small logic level input voltage, typically 5V or 3.3V and using the NPN Darlington pair array to amplify the current and produce a higher voltage and current output to switch on external, load elements. In order to limit the output current to a preset value, the ULN2074B also provides a constant-current limiting feature on all outputs.The ULN2074B provides many benefits over discrete solutions, including improved thermal performance, cost savings, improved packaging density, shorter leadtime and simplified design and assembly.
