Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are a type of electrolytic capacitor that relies on an oxide of an aluminum electrode together with a electrolyte solution to double as a dielectric material and an electrolyte. Compared to other types of capacitors, aluminum electrolytic capacitors are known for their high capacitance per unit volume or area. It is because of this that aluminum electrolytic capacitors are often used where a very large amount of energy needs to be stored in a compact package.
One such aluminum electrolytic capacitor is the UMF0J220MDD. It is a miniature SMD capacitor with a 225VDC voltage rating and a capacitance of 4700µF. The UMF0J220MDD is a chip-type capacitor with cylindrical aluminum case and a snap-in shaped. It has a monolithic construction with an anode, cathode, and solderable terminal for external connections.
Applications of the UMF0J220MDD include use as energy storage in SMPS (switch mode power supply), batteries’ voltage stabilizing, motor circuits, film capacitor replacements, and more.
This type of capacitor involves a process in which aluminum anodes, each coated in a thin oxidized film, are immersed into an electrolyte solution. The oxidized aluminum anodes are then connected to a positive voltage source which creates an electric field across the thickness of the oxide layer. The electric field probes the surface of the oxide, polarizing the charges in the oxide material, an effect that is referred to as “polarization”.
The polarized oxide creates a capacitance, an effect in which current is blocked from flowing between the anode and cathode when a predetermined voltage has been reached. By increasing the voltage, polarization increases, causing the capacitance to increase. This ultimately causes the capacitance to become “charged” and remain in that state until the voltage is reduced.
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors have a wide variety of applications in many different industries, including telecommunications, aerospace, consumer electronics and more. The UMF0J220MDD is one such example, with its wide range of applications and high capacitance per unit volume or area.
