Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are polarized electrochemical components that use the electrical double layer effect to generate a capacitance of several dozen microfarads to thousands of microfarads, depending on the size. AECs have a large capacitance in a small package, and are therefore used in a wide variety of applications in fields such as electronics, communications, and automobile industries.

UMP1V100MDD Application Field and Working Principle

The UMP1V100MDD, made by Tadiran, is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor with a capacitance range of 1μF-1000μF and a rated voltage of 1V-100V. This high-performance AEC uses lower ESR and minimal ESL, providing an enhanced mix of capacitance and voltage ratings compared to conventional capacitors. It has a wide operating temperature range up to 105°C and its high ESR, high rated ripple current and high pulse load capability make the UMP1V100MDD ideal for a variety of high-efficiency energy storage applications.

The main components of the UMP1V100MDD are an anode and cathode set, each of which are made from aluminum foil as the core components. These plates are then separated by a paper or foil/film dielectric and soaked in a special electrolyte. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, an electrochemical reaction takes place in which aluminum oxide and the electrolyte react to form a second layer of insulation. This second layer of insulation is what gives the capacitor its capacitance. The capacitance of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor is calculated by multiplying the total surface area of the conductive plates by the dielectric constant of the electrolyte.

The UMP1V100MDD aluminum electrolytic capacitor is designed primarily for general-purpose and industrial applications, such as start/stop, inverters, and UPS. Its high-performance characteristics make it ideal for use in a wide range of high-frequency circuit protection and pulse load operations, as well as in DC/DC converters, switching power supplies, and more. These capacitors are also used in a variety of automotive applications, such as horns, fuel pumps, anti-lock brakes, and other systems.
