Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (AECs) are electro-chemical devices that are commonly used in electronics to store electrical energy and act as a buffer. AECs are made from aluminum and have a non-conductive electrolyte placed between two metal electrodes. The capacitance of an AEC varies depending on its size, but typically ranges from 1 micro Farad (µF) to several thousand µF.
USW1H3R3MDD1TE Application Field and Working Principle
AECs are widely used in a variety of electronics applications. The most common application is in power supplies, where they are used to filter the power in noise-sensitive circuits and to provide quick charge and discharge times. Additionally, AECs are used in audio systems, tube amplifiers, electronic amplifiers, radio systems, and to limit current in sensitive circuits. They can also be found in computers, televisions, and a variety of power supplies.
AECs consist of a body made of an electrically conductive material such as aluminum. This is sandwiched by a low pass dielectric layer and a high pass layer, usually made of tantalum or ceramic. On the outside of the body are two electrodes that connect to the power supply. Between the two layers is a thin film of electrolyte. The electrolyte contains metal cations such as aluminum, which are used to form a conductive bridge between the electrodes.
When a voltage is applied across the device, the electrolyte will react with the metal cations in the electrolyte to form an electric field between the two electrodes. This field creates a capacitance, allowing the device to store energy. When the voltage is removed, the electric field will dissipate, allowing the device to release the stored energy.
AECs have several advantages over other types of capacitors. They have a high capacitance per unit volume, allowing for a smaller size. Additionally, they have a lower inner resistance due to the thin layers of electrolyte, which makes them ideal for use in filtering noise-sensitive circuits. Additionally, they have a longer service life due to their robust construction.
AECs are a popular choice for a variety of electronics applications due to their high capacitance, low inner resistance, and long service life. While they are more expensive than other types of capacitors, their higher performance will often make up for the cost difference.
