The basic principles of aluminum electrolytic capacitors are that the anode is a layer of aluminum foil with an oxide layer on its surface. The oxide layer is used as an insulating material between the electrodes so that the capacitor can be charged and discharged efficiently. On one side of the anode, a layer of cottonoid paper is soaked in a liquid electrolyte, giving the capacitor its characteristics of electrolysis.
