Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are most often used as energy storage devices. This type of capacitor is made using an electrolyte gelfilled with an aluminum foil and two electrodes. When a voltage is applied across the electrodes, electrons from the negative electrode react with the aluminum to form a thin film of oxide and hydroxide which acts as a dielectric layer in the capacitor, allowing a current to flow.
