TVS - Varistors, MOVsVaristors, also known as voltage-dependent resistors (VDRs) are transistors having aa large non-linearity in their current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. They are made of semiconductor materials that have their electrical properties changed when a voltage is applied to them. This makes them excellent at protecting sensitive electronic equipment from excessive voltages, as they absorb the excess current and dissipate it as heat energy.The MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) is probably the most common type of varistor. It consists of a disk-like ceramic component with two or three metal electrodes attached. The electrodes are insulated from the ceramic, and the entire assembly is usually encapsulated in a plastic or epoxy material. When voltage is applied to the electrodes, the MOV will absorb excess current and dissipate it as heat. MOVs typically have breakdown voltages ranging from 18V to 600V, with larger devices having higher breakdown voltages and larger capacitances. MOVs and other types of varistors are frequently used in electronic protection devices, such as surge and over-voltage protectors. They are also used to protect circuit components from transient voltage spikes, such as those generated by lightning strikes or power-line switching.The V420LA20CP is a conventional MOV with an LED indicator that is designed for use in AC/DC power line protection. It has voltage range of 180V-420V AC/DC and current range of 7.8A-200V AC/DC. The device has a capacitance of 160pF and a peak capacitance rating of 20A. The LED indicator on the device can be used to indicate overvoltage conditions. In order to protect sensitive electronics, many applications require multiple MOVs in parallel. This increases the total capacitance, which in turn increases the current rating and the effectivity of the device. It is important to note that the peak capacitance rating for a given MOV should not be exceeded, as this could decrease its lifetime and lead to device failure. Furthermore, the internal heat generated by the MOVs must be taken into consideration when selecting them for an application.To further enhance the protection provided by MOVs, some designs include additional components such as diodes, transient voltage suppressors (TVS), protection fuses and gas discharge tubes.
