Introduction to TVS - Varistors, MOVs

Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are devices specially designed to protect sensitive electronics and power supplies from excessive sets of electrical transients. Applying the basic principles of a Varistor or Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV), these devices limit the voltage spike to a non-destructive level. Varistors, or Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are essentially resistive components whose resistance decreases with increased voltage, thus dissipating the energy as heat.

Description of V575LS40A

One significant application of a TVS is the common V575LS40A. This device is a low-capacitance 5 kV, 5.7V unidirectional TVS diode array for ESD protection, designed to protect sensitive electronic components from damage. The termination design features low inductance connections for improved protection from high frequency surges. The main protection applications of V575LS40A are automotive and communications to allow single package solution for both ESD and transient voltage protection. The total capacitance of the device is 5 pF which is suitable for interface and I/O protection applications. The peak pulse current rating of V575LS40A is rated up to 20A(8/20μs waveform) and the maximum clamping voltage is Vc = 12.9V. The device produces a low capacitance with high ESD protection of 15KV at HBM and 8KV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD.

V575LS40A Working Principle

TVSs like V575LS40A work by reducing over voltage spikes to safe levels and redirecting them away from sensitive components. The operating principle for V575LS40A is essentially an increased parallel resistance between the drain and source. This is accomplished through the semiconductor construction formed by a series of Silicon diodes - that each have their own threshold voltage. The forward biasing of this diode structure produces a parallel resistance path across them which has a clamped voltage limit. When the voltage reaches the peak limit, the diode structure begins to conduct, allowing a high current from the spike to flow. This current is dissipated as heat, producing a voltage drop and protecting the sensitive electronic components. This reaction of preventing transient voltages is known as clamping.
