The device consists of three major components – the radio-frequency disc capacitor and two non-inductive resistors. At the center of the device is the capacitor which has a dielectric material that can withstand high voltages and high temperatures. This capacitor is connected to the ground and acts as a protective barrier. The non-inductive resistors then provide additional protection for the circuit.
The working principle of the V575LT40AP is to provide a high current and low voltage clamping capability. The two non-inductive resistors are connected in series forming a voltage divider that can keep the voltage within specified limits. When a transient current passes through the device, the current will be divided by the non-inductive resistors. The voltage across the device will then be limited, and the voltage spike can be safely clamped.
When the incoming transient voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the device, the protective dielectric will break down and create a path for the passage of the transient current. This current is then limited by the capacitance of the capacitor and the resistance of the resistors. As the current reaches the value of the breakdown voltage, the current is divided and the voltage returns to a safe level. Thus the protection circuit can be activated.
