Introduction
The VEMD2003X01 photo diode is a solid state device which converts a photon of light to a single electron. It is obtained in many forms such as a servo mounted pre-processor, a monolithic structure, a monolithic calorimeter, a hybrid structure or a direct-coupled diode. It is developed specifically for applications such as automotive lighting, industrial lighting and instrumentation.Application Field
VEMD2003X01 photo diode is used in automotive lighting, industrial lighting and instrumentation. This diode offers superior performance over other photo diodes in applications such as wavelength-selective detection of light for pulse length measurement in the automotive industry. It is also used for the measurement of the light intensity (e.g., from the automotive lobby to the dashboard), as a signal source for the adjustment of light brightness or directional control, and as integration in monitor or head up displays for the control of the display brightness. In industrial setting, it is efficiently used for the measurement of the light intensity or power from fiber optic sources. Since it is stamped and molded in the shape of a photodiode, it is also used in automated equipment to detect the presence or absence of light in the production line. As for instrumentation, it is employed to detect fluorescence or bioluminescence from biological specimens, plus used for applications in the lab or medical sector such as reflection from surfaces, light intensity, power or white reflectance for colour tests.Working Principle
The VEMD2003X01 photo diode works on a simple and effective principle. When photons, or light particles, strike a photo diode, the photons are absorbed by the semiconductor material, releasing electrons which flow through an electrical circuit. This current is then measured, providing an output voltage. The wavelength of the light is an important factor in determining the output of the photo diode; because different wavelengths of light have different energy levels, they can create different currents and thus different output voltages.The diode is also designed to respond to the size of the optical signal. In order to be sensitive to smaller optical signals, the photo diode is given a voltage bias, which creates a constant current flowing through it even when there is no light present. When light is then present, the current is increased due to the extra electrons created by the light, which is then detected and used for the applications mentioned before.This type of photo diode also comes with a built-in temperature sensor, ideal for applications such as automotive engine control. For this type of application, the effect of temperature on the photo diode’s output is monitored, and then manipulated further.
