Optical Sensors - Photodiodes are a type of sensor which measures the light energy entering, and is often designed to respond with the electrical signals. The VEMD5510CF, is a fully integrated micro package environment sensor designed to measure the ambient light intensity and has an I2C digital output.
The VEMD5510CF is designed to achieve high accuracy by compensating for both temperature and aging of the photodiode. Its sensing area is an 11x11mm die size, with a wide sensing range that covers infrared, visible and ultraviolet light. Its working frequency is adjustable from 0.001 to 5 minutes, and is fully adjustable between 0 and 65535 codes.
The appliance field of the VEMD5510CF covers indoor lighting control, camera brightness control, LCD and PDA backlight control, and display backlight compensation. It gives accurate, robust and reliable light measurements and offers a wide dynamic range.
The VEMD5510CF works by converting optical radiation into an electrical current. It is composed of a lens, a photodiode, integrated circuitry and I2C differential outputs. The lens transmits the light into the light-sensitive photodiode which, in turn, produces an electric current that is amplified and shaped in the electronics of the sensor. The analog signal is then digitized and processed to give the I2C execution output.
The internal circuitry uses a dedicated algorithm to produce a temperature-compensated modulated signal output, making it one of the most reliable light sensors available. The device can be configured to measure an area from 1/4” to 10” depending on the current output setting.
The VEMD5510CF is application-specific, providing flexibility combined with good performance. It operates in a wide range of temperatures from -40°C to +125°C and is designed for operation at high temperatures and high humidity. It also has a fast response time and can handle up to 500 mW/cm2 of incident light intensity without saturation. It is also available with an optional infrared filter that can filter out visible light and measure the ambient IR light intensity.
