The VEML7700-TR (TWO-IN-ONE Ambient Light and Color Sensor) is a single-chip optical sensor with two types of integrated photo sensing elements (IR Filter and UV Filter) that enables more accurate ambient light and color detection. This two-chip optical sensor utilizes a combination of different photofilter materials to measure both ambient light and color, and is designed to deliver digital output values and raw ADC values to the user. Application Field

Working Principle

The VEML7700-TR measures the light intensity of a surrounding environment by using a light sensitive photodiode. This photodiode uses two types of integrated photofilter materials (IR filter and UV filter) for more accurate detection of ambient light and color. A light dependent resistor (LDR) is used to regulate the amount of light which enters the device. Upon receiving the light, an analog voltage divider circuit maintains a constant voltage across the photodiode, which is used for the calculations. To measure the light intensity, a low noise amplifier (LNA) and an A/D converter process the analog signal and converts it to a digital output.

The VEML7700-TR also contains a programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and a reference current generator to provide different sensitivities of the ambient light sensing so that it can be customized to the user’s application. The chip also contains a temperature sensor to compensate the temperature of the sensing element. All of these components contribute to making the device highly sensitive and accurate. Additionally, the device has two integrated data ley storage memories for storing calibration and data parameters.
