Primarily, supervisors offer an intelligent solution for managing power circuitry when provided a power supply, giving a reliable output that meets the system’s requirements.The X5043PZ-2.7 (X5043PZ) is an ultra-low voltage supervisor IC, designed to help reduce overall power consumption in battery-powered systems. The X5043PZ is a low power and SMBus compliant supervisor developed to monitor and control power sequencing with enhanced accuracy and flexibility. It features a four-channel monitoring system and the ability to power-down on system errors. In addition, the X5043PZ provides on-chip system housekeeping functions such as BATFET enable/disable control, script programming and fan enable/disable control. The supervisor also provides on-chip configuration of system error conditions and automatic recovery from errors, when possible.The X5043PZ-2.7 is a three-in-one supervisor IC which incorporates operations including power-on reset, power supply monitoring and brownout detector protection. This IC monitors the battery voltage (V BAT ) for proper levels, system errors and power-down conditions. The on-chip comparators are capable of supplying status register tracking, working on any voltage supplied directly to V DD and its outputs. By applying a top-sense architecture, the X5043PZ can detect battery dropouts as low as 2.5V, which makes it suitable for use as a battery switch option. When the device is detecting a low input voltage, it will control a BATFET to turn the battery off or switch sources.In terms of operation and control, the X5043PZ can be configured in any of the three following modes: battery-presence monitoring, power sequencer control or an independent power supply monitor. This also allows for a host processor/controller to be involved in managing the power system based on system needs. In addition, the X5043PZ can be triggered and multiplexed with other components, such as for wake-up on a low system voltage or to extend the functionality of a microcontroller power supply system. This facilitates the continuous monitoring of power supply systems for error and faults, enabling the system to gracefully shut down or power down appropriately, in order to conserve battery power.In battery-presence monitoring mode, the X5043PZ monitors the voltage applied to its inputs and produces an output when a battery is detected. The output can then be used as an input to an external device, such as a microcontroller. This option provides flexibility in controlling power sequencing and can be used to monitor battery voltage and provide an early warning of depleted or aging battery cells.In power sequencer control mode, the X5043PZ can be programmed to control the order of power sequencing and the timing of each step. The X5043PZ can be programmed to detect any undervoltage, overvoltage and other system errors, which then triggers the activation of its power sequencing outputs, like the BATFET or the system reset. With this mode of operation, the host processor can be involved in detecting and diagnosing power supply issues and can shut down the system as a necessary response.The X5043PZ-2.7 also offers an independent power supply monitor mode, which helps to verify power system operation. In this mode, the X5043PZ cross-references the voltage applied on the power rail with the power supply’s own current.
