PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) is a vital part of any system’s design in order to control, monitor and maintain the power supplies. Supervisorsare a specialized type of PMIC, designed to provide system-management functions like reset, watchdog and power-supples sequencing features, etc. The X5045S8I-2.7 is a PMIC supervisor specifically designed to provide sequence control (power-on-reset, power-good, reset, and power-off reset) to systems with external power-supply sequencing requirements.
The X5045S8I-2.7 from Exar is especially designed for the automotive and industrial applications that require the optimal power sequencing. It provides an accurate fixed reset threshold voltage. The engineering individuals who are working on these applications will benefit from its low operating voltage, low external components count, small package size, and temperature operating range of -40 °C to 150 °C.
The X5045S8I-2.7 monitors a minimum of three power supplies namely Vcc, V Sup, and AVcc for valid supply levels during system power-up, power-down and reset conditions. During a power-up sequence, the X5045S8I-2.7 starts with the Vcc supply and operates it in a staggered mode to ensure that the external circuitry is stable and running in the correct voltage window before proceeding with the V Sup and AVcc supplies. It holds the AVcc and V Sup in a reset state until Vcc reaches its valid operating range.
After Vcc is started, the X5045S8I-2.7 checks thatAVcc is at the valid level and then allows the reset sequence to start by activating the PORB and RESB pins. RESB and PORB are then held in reset for a period of time determined by the RSTH pin. After RESB and PORB are released from reset,the X5045S8I-2.7 monitors AVcc, V sup and Vcc voltage levels for valid operating conditions. If all voltages are within their specified valid ranges, the X5045S8I-2.7lowers the PONB pin after the time determined by RSTH.
The X5045S8I-2.7 also offers an adjustable version, the X5045S8I-2.7A, which allows the user to program the voltage level of RESB and PONB utilising external resistors. This adjustable feature permits further flexibility in system implementation and environment operation.X5045S8I-2.7A ensures that the reset sequence is started at the correct voltage level each time a system power-up takes place.
The X5045S8I-2.7/A also has two configurable pins PAD and MAG that can be used to initiate a system power-down mode and for reset time extension when the system is running slower than it should be. If PAD is set to low, the X5045S8I-2.7/A forces an active-low reset. This pin can also be used to control the output pins PONB, AVONB and PORB during a power-down sequence.
The X5045S8I-2.7/A also provides an easy optional push-pull feature via the WDT pin. This pin is open drains to allow for easy reset extension in embedded applications, while the WDT pin can be configured to monitor the system watchdog if required. Furthermore, the WDT pin provides a 5 second event to enter the system power-down mode if required. When the WDT pin is set high, the X5045S8I-2.7/A continuously monitors it, and when its level drops to low, the X5045S8I-2.7/A drives PONB, AVONB and PORB to an active-low level, which turns off the system.
In this way, the X5045S8I-2.7/A provides reliable power sequencing and reset functions for the industrial and automotive applications, thereby protecting the system. Its flexibility and robustness simplifies the design of external power supplies and reset circuits needed for the reliable operation of various systems.
