MAX16822BASA+ is an advanced, low-power and low-cost, 180mΩ internal power switch, providing a complete and efficient solution for powering LEDs in Mono Color and RGB applications over a wide-range of input voltages. Built on a highly reliable and low-cost process technology and offering low power, fast transient response and low profile surface mount packaging, MAX16822BASA+ maximizes system performance and appeal in energy-constrained embedded and portable applications.

MAX16822BASA+ PrimeCote™ protection-coated package combines the low profile of a standard thermal pad with the reliable benefits of epoxy encapsulation. The MAX16822BASA+ PrimeCote™ thermal pad, which consists of a 10-mils thick top coat, is designed to provide a reliable, durable, and moisture-resistant layer for a longer shelf life without the need for additional re-work such as flux application.

The MAX16822BASA+ belongs to the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) family and specifically to the LED Drivers group. LED Drivers are power management integrated circuits, which include step-down (buck) current regulators or step-up (boost) current regulators, to drive high-current LEDs which require constant current or constant voltage, or a combination. LEDs require precise current control, as too much current will damage the LED and reduce the lifespan, and too little current will cause the LED light intensity to be weak. Many LED driver ICs have built-in features such as open and close-loop current regulation, which helps prevent over-current from occurring in the first place.

The MAX16822BASA+ provides a fast, accurate, and flexible current booster architecture, with excellent load regulation, low ripple, and adjustable output current control, making it ideal for driving multiple Serially Connected LEDs (SC-LEDs). This device has a wide operating voltage range of 2.7V to 19V and operates in either constant current or constant voltage mode. It can drive up to four (4) SC-LEDs with power up to 0.5W. The MAX16822BASA+has three (3) logic-programmable features that provide flexibility in controlling LED brightness: PWM (pulse width modulation) dimming, analog dimming and LED dimming.

The MAX16822BASA+ operates using a feedback current control loop, where a constant current is maintained in the LED string. This device features a “Smart Element”, a dedicated logic block to regulate the LED current and monitor the condition of the LEDs. It uses an error amplifier and a transconductance amplifier to determine the output current, which is fed back to the “Smart Element” for constant current regulation. When SC-LEDs are connected in series, the LED current is regulated independently, maintaining an even LED brightness. Furthermore, when LED open circuit or short circuit occurs, the device dynamically reduces the LED current to minimize the power dissipation and safe-guard against LED damage.

The MAX16822BASA+ has an active power saving feature that reduces the power consumption down to 1.0µA when the system is in the standby or sleep mode. This helps conserve energy, increase system autonomy and reduce temperature, thus increasing overall system reliability. The device is tested and verified over the full military temperature range of -55°C to +85°C, making it ideal for use in highly reliable applications, such as avionics, automobiles and industrial control.

The MAX16822BASA+ comes in a MSOP-10 package with a 3mm x 3mm footprint and a 0.50mm thickness, which allows for easy integration in space constrained applications. The tiny 3 x 3mm MSOP-10 package helps maximize printed circuit board design options, providing flexibility for designers and offering an extended thermal pad coverage.
