The MIC28304-1-12V-EV is an evaluation board from Microchip Technology, designed to demonstrate the operation and capability of the MIC28304, a high-power (2.5A) monolithic CMOS synchronous buck regulator. It is categorized as one of the Evaluation Boards - DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS due to its function as a switching converter from a dc voltage input to a dc voltage output. By cutting costs and dividing complex control functions of the regulator, this type of board provides a wide range of voltage and current settings in the range of 0.8V to 5.5V and 1mA to 2.5A, respectively.

The board operates through two stages, the Cuk topology and the synchronous rectification. The Cuk stage involves the primary side converter, equipped with a pass transistor MOSFET, operating in a voltage regulation mode for output current control. It regulates the input voltage to the load, thus changing the core voltage to the desired level. Unlike the linear regulator, the Cuk topology allows for a near-ideal input voltage regulation. On the other hand, synchronous rectification (SR) uses direct-current (DC) to control the voltage and current for the load. The SR stage is designed to produce a dc voltage output, which is regulated without any switching losses. The MIC28304 also combines the two stages along with an adaptive biasing scheme to ensure high efficiency.

The MIC28304-1-12V-EV evaluation board is designed to be used with the MIC28304, a high-power (2.5A) monolithic CMOS synchronous buck regulator. In addition to the primary parts of the regulation circuit, the board includes some additional circuitry for proper operation with the MIC28304. It includes integrated circuitry such as an on-board loop compensation network, an on-board thermistor, an input voltage monitor circuit, and an extended voltage enable circuit. These features make the board highly configurable and enable it to be used in various applications.

In addition to the primary operation of the device, the board offers multiple features that make it ideal for experimental work. The board includes a ±2V DC accuracy range, 7 MHz switching frequency, excellent transient response, and excellent efficiency. Its full-load efficiency can reach as high as 97%, with over current protection and thermal shutdown safety features. The board is also designed to be used with any Microchip microcontroller and it can be coupled with a separate power supply to run the microcontroller.
