A TVS diode, or transient voltage suppressor, is a type of device used to protect electrical circuits from high voltage transients, or sudden power surges as a result of electrostatic discharge (ESD) or electromagnetic interference (EMI). The 1N8154 TVS diode is a three-terminal unidirectional device, specifically designed to protect electronic circuits from high-voltage transients.
The 1N8154 TVS diode has a peak pulse power rating of 400 watts at 8/20 μs (microseconds) waveform, a reverse standoff voltage of 23 volts, and a breakdown voltage of 25 volts. This high voltage/power surge protecting diode has a minimum breakdown voltage of 25 volts (VBR) at a rate of 1A (Ir) and can absorb up to 400 watts through the avalanche effect. It can therefore withstand large voltage transients that exceed 30V without triggering a shunt.
The 1N8154 TVS diode is also designed for fast response times; its total clamping time is typically less than 30 ns (nanoseconds). This ensures that the device does not saturate electronic components by diffusing current over a longer period of time. As a result, 1N8154 TVS diodes are ideal for protecting consumer electronics from ESD, EMI, and power surges.
To illustrate the working principle of the 1N8154 TVS diode, consider a circuit with a single +28V power supply. The anode of the 1N8154 diode is connected to the +28V rail, and the cathode is grounded. When a transient voltage above the TVS diode’s reverse standoff voltage of 23V is applied, the TVS diode will commence to conduct current away from the 28V rail. This is the operating voltage range of this diode.
The 1N8154 TVS diode is also capable of conducting current up to 630μA for short-term high peak voltages and up to 280μA for long-term or continuous pulses. After the transient voltage drops below the TVS diode’s reverse standoff voltage, the junction will turn off and the diode will no longer conduct current. The transient voltage is therefore diverted away from the 28V rail and safely dissipated, preventing associated components or circuits from being damaged.
In addition to its application in consumer electronic products, the 1N8154 TVS diode is also widely used in automotive electronic control units for protection against high voltage transients caused by a variety of external sources, including spark plugs, generators, and alternators. Similarly, the 1N8154 diode is used in medical applications, such as power supplies or diagnostics equipment, to protect circuitry against overvoltages or power surges.
